From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.
From the time I first made contact until the time the Funeral was concluded the service provided from all of your staff was professional, courteous and thoughtful. Everything went very smoothly on the day and I would not hesitate to recommend you.

From the moment we met Amy, we were reassured everything would be handled sympathetically and with sensitivity. She kept us well informed of all the details pertaining to the arrangements and followed up with a curtesy call after the funeral service.
The staff who looked after us on the day were very polite, respectful and professional.

When we lost our dear mum in December 2022 she had already had a funeral plan arranged . Amy contacted us from Fs Smith a couple of hours later to arrange a date and time to visit her in Staines in her office . We found her very caring and helpful with great empathy . She showed mums plan to us and continued to organise everything .
Making the process so much easier to deal with ,nothing too much trouble ,we are very grateful for so much care .
Thank you Amy you are amazing .
Thank you for highlighting a member of our team who has made a difference to your personal experience. All feedback is greatly appreciated. It has been an honour to look after you and your loved one and to respond sensitively to your specific needs. Thank you for the kind comments posted on your online review.
Amy was great and I really appreciated the way that everything was put together.
We wanted the day to be a reflection of the man my uncle was and to be filled with the essence of him. I really feel that we achieved that with Amys help and recommendations, especially in advising us on the right minister for us. Niall put us at our ease on the day and helped to make the service go smoothly.
I really appreciated his call the day before which totally put me at my ease. On the day he was professional yet friendly and supportive. Talking me through everything and being so kind. I was unsure if I would be able to stand up and give the eulogy but on the day I felt relaxed and supported enough to read it. That again was thanks to Niall and his gentle guidance.
Although there are time pressures at Hanworth, we felt none of that. The whole team were relaxed and we felt that we were important and given the time that we needed to say goodbye. He guided us within our time slot with no projection of urgency or feeling rushed, which I have experienced recently with another funeral director.
The family were advised and supported appropriately in decisions to view the body and say goodbye.
I would recommend FSmith and son without hesitation.
Thank you for this recommendation. Your kind words mean a great deal to the team who always work very hard to deliver great care and I am pleased to hear that our team were so accommodating and their recommendations were helpful.
The whole team are professional in every sense. They are pleasant, courteous and having a pre paid funeral plan certainly made life easier for me personally.
I am happy that the pre-paid funeral plan made it easier to arrange the service. I am pleased to hear that you found our staff to be professional and respectful.
